Seismic Design Category
B for typical Risk Category II warehouse occupancies on Site Class D across most of WV. Eastern WV counties (Pendleton, Hardy, Grant, Hampshire, Mineral) sit near the Giles County, VA seismic zone and can reach SDC C depending on Site Class and Risk Category

Anchoring & bracing
2018 IBC ยง2209 references RMI/ANSI MH16.1 for steel storage rack design. In SDC B (most of WV), seismic detailing is required but reduced; in SDC C (eastern WV pockets), full MH16.1 seismic provisions apply with R factor reductions and bracing detailing.

When fire review is triggered
WV adopts 2018 IFC; Chapter 32 (High-Piled Combustible Storage) triggers at > 500 sq ft of high-piled storage (12 ft+ general, 6 ft+ for high-hazard commodities). Plans and a storage permit must be submitted to the AHJ โ€” locally the fire marshal, with WV State Fire Marshal oversight.

Yes. WV Code ยง30-13-13 and ยง30-13-16 require a WV-registered PE seal/signature on engineered designs offered to the public; the seal must read "Registered Professional Engineer, State of West Virginia" and the work must be under the PE's direct control.

  • Energy-corridor warehousing (coal, natural gas, oilfield services) in north-central and southern WV.
  • Kanawha Valley chemical-industry warehouses (Charleston/South Charleston/Institute) often trigger hazmat overlays beyond Ch. 32.
  • Rural enforcement is thin โ€” many counties have no building department, in which case only the state fire marshal effectively has jurisdiction over commercial racking.
  • Eastern panhandle/Allegheny counties feel the Giles County, VA seismic zone โ€” more conservative anchor design appropriate.
  • WV is an unusual case: 8'-11" permit threshold per 2018 IBC (vs. the 5'-9" used in most states). Verify with AHJ.
