🌐 Seismic Requirements
- Seismic Design Category
- D across most populated Alaska. Portions of the Aleutians and near-fault South-central can reach E. Alaska is the highest-seismicity state in the US
- Sds range
- Site-specific via ASCE Hazard Tool. Anchorage typically returns very high Sds in the ~1.2–1.7g range (Site Class D, ASCE 7-22). Fairbanks much lower (~0.4–0.7g). Juneau low-to-moderate (~0.3–0.5g).
- Anchoring & bracing
- ANSI MH16.1-2021 governs rack design. In SDC D/E it requires full seismic detailing, drift checks, cyclic connection testing (§9.6), seismic separation from building columns, and applicable Ip per ASCE 7-22 Ch. 13/15. Engineering burden is among the highest in the US.
