MHIMaterial Handling Institute

MHI is the largest material handling and logistics trade association in the US. It's the parent organization for several industry groups (including RMI and SMA) and runs the ProMat and MODEX trade shows — the two biggest events in the warehouse industry. MHI membership signals that a company is active in the broader material handling ecosystem, not just pallet rack.

Why MHI Membership Matters

  • MHI members participate in industry standards development and technology advancement
  • Access to ProMat and MODEX networking puts members in front of the latest equipment and technology
  • MHI publishes industry reports and benchmarks that help members stay current
  • Membership indicates a company that's invested in the industry beyond just selling product

Membership Requirements

MHI membership is open to companies involved in material handling, logistics, and supply chain. Annual dues are based on company size and revenue. Members must be in good standing and adhere to MHI's code of ethics. There's no product testing or certification requirement — MHI is a trade association, not a standards body (though it houses standards bodies like RMI).

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between MHI and RMI?
RMI (Rack Manufacturers Institute) is a division within MHI focused specifically on storage rack. MHI is the umbrella organization covering all material handling — conveyors, forklifts, robotics, rack, shelving, and more. A company can be an MHI member without being an RMI member, but all RMI members are also part of the MHI family.
Does MHI membership mean a company's products are tested or certified?
No. MHI is a trade association, not a certification body. Membership means the company is active in the industry and pays dues. Product testing and structural standards are handled by RMI (a division of MHI) through ANSI MH16.1. Don't confuse MHI membership with RMI compliance — they're related but different.
